The Khor Kalba Gulf of Oman Pelagic is the UAE's longest-running and most productive dedicated offshore seabird trip — an extraordinary resource for one of the world's most sought-after and poorly known seabirds. Organised by the uaebirding.com community and captained by the incomparable Abdalla al-Zaabi since June 2010, the trips depart from Khor Kalba Harbour on the Gulf of Oman coast and steam 35–58 kilometres out into open ocean, placing the boat squarely above the deep Arabian Sea and into the pelagic zone that concentrates the defining birds of the northwest Indian Ocean. Khor Kalba itself is a small town straddling the Sharjah–Fujairah border on the UAE's east coast — the only point at which the UAE touches the Gulf of Oman rather than the Arabian Gulf. The Gulf of Oman connects the Persian Gulf to the open Indian Ocean via the Strait of Hormuz, and in summer it is swept by the southwest monsoon upwelling that drives nutrient-rich water towards the surface along the Arabian coastline. This process brings extraordinary concentrations of Arabian Sea seabirds into the productive surface layers, and within the range of a half-day boat trip from Khor Kalba. The undisputed star of the Khor Kalba pelagic is Jouanin's Petrel (Bulweria fallax, IUCN Near Threatened). This medium-sized, uniformly dark-brown tubenose of the northwestern Indian Ocean remains one of the least understood seabirds in the world — its only confirmed breeding site is Socotra Island (Yemen), though breeding in Oman's remote interior is strongly suspected. Outside the breeding season it ranges widely across the Arabian Sea, and the waters off Khor Kalba offer some of the most consistent and accessible encounters with this species anywhere on earth. In major influx years, counts have exceeded 600 birds on a single trip; on 11 August 2025, over 80 Jouanin's Petrels were recorded on a single pelagic off Kalba. Regular trip records of 21–150 birds during October and November make this arguably the most reliable accessible location globally to encounter Jouanin's Petrel. Autumn (October–November) is the peak season; spring (April–May) can also be productive. Persian Shearwater (Puffinus persicus) is the second headline target — a medium-sized, dark-backed tubenose that breeds on the Kuria Muria Islands offshore from Dhofar, Oman, and on Socotra. It ranges into Gulf of Oman waters throughout the year and on productive trips appears in remarkable concentrations: around 1,000 or more individuals have been documented in just three hours on the best days, with birds coming readily to the boat to investigate. Persian Shearwater sits alongside Jouanin's Petrel as the principal reason serious seabird listers make the trip to this corner of Arabia. Wilson's Storm-Petrel (Oceanites oceanicus), the world's most numerous seabird and a north-migrating visitor from Antarctic breeding grounds, is a regular fixture on most trips with counts of 11–50 or more, pattering characteristically at the sea surface. Flesh-footed Shearwater (Ardenna carneipes), a large pale-billed shearwater breeding in Australia and New Zealand, appears regularly in small numbers. Sooty Shearwater (Ardenna grisea), formerly a vagrant to UAE waters, has become almost annual in recent years — five birds were recorded off Khor Kalba on 26 April 2025 — reflecting its expanding presence in north Indian Ocean waters. In April 2025, two Short-tailed Shearwaters (Ardenna tenuirostris) were photographed off Ra's Dibba, establishing the first UAE record for this species. Swinhoe's Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates monorhis), one of the most difficult Asian storm-petrels to identify, has produced multiple UAE records and country firsts on Khor Kalba pelagic trips. Long-tailed Skua (Stercorarius longicaudus) and Pomarine Skua (S. pomarinus) are recorded on autumn passage. Red-footed Booby (Sula sula), one of the scarcest UAE seabirds with fewer than ten records, has been documented from these pelagic trips. Abdalla al-Zaabi is a committed local naturalist who has combined his fishing knowledge of the Gulf of Oman with a passion for seabird watching since 2010; he has added numerous notable records himself during fishing trips and contributed substantially to the understanding of UAE seabird occurrence. The trips are organised cooperatively through the uaebirding.com community, which maintains a trip planning page where any birder — resident or visiting — can add their name to an upcoming departure. Cash is paid to Abdalla on the day. Participants must bring a passport or UAE ID card as the harbour authority requires notification before departure. The community also organises supplementary pelagic trips to the Ra's Dibba fish farm area in northern Fujairah, which has proved productive for a different set of seabirds concentrated around the aquaculture facilities.
