Canada's Pacific and Atlantic coasts offer outstanding pelagic birding in very different ocean systems. British Columbia's outer Vancouver Island coast — particularly around Tofino and Port Hardy — sits directly on the open North Pacific, where the submarine canyons of Clayoquot and Quatsino Sounds concentrate Black-footed Albatross, Pink-footed and Flesh-footed Shearwaters, and Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel. The cold Labrador Current off Newfoundland draws vast numbers of Great and Sooty Shearwaters to the Grand Banks each summer. Year-round marine mammal diversity — Humpback and Fin Whales, Dall's Porpoise, Northern Fur Seals — adds to the offshore experience on both coasts.
