About This Trip

Birding Ecosse runs intimate guided pelagic birding days on the CalMac ferry crossing between Ullapool and Stornoway, treating the 2.5-hour open-water crossing of the North Minch as a dedicated seabird platform — a model that puts this trip in the same tradition as the celebrated Japanese ferry pelagics and the Pembrokeshire Celtic Deep crossings. The itinerary is purely pelagic: the group takes the outbound sailing to Stornoway then immediately returns on the next crossing without going ashore, maximising time on the open Minch. The North Minch crossing passes through some of the most productive offshore seabird waters in the British Isles, with the cold, nutrient-rich Atlantic water meeting shallow banks to concentrate feeding birds in significant numbers during the late-summer and autumn passage peak. Manx and Sooty Shearwaters are consistent — records of over 140 Sooty Shearwaters in a single flock have been logged from this crossing — alongside European Storm-Petrel and regular appearances of all three large British skua species: Great, Arctic, and Pomarine. Leach's Petrel is possible following westerly gales, and Sabine's Gull and Grey Phalarope appear during autumn passage. Trips are guided personally by Dave Slater, who has extensive knowledge of the west Highland coast and the seabird dynamics of the Minch. Group size is capped at four passengers, giving each participant ample deck space and direct access to the guide — a sharp contrast to the overcrowded ferry decks typical of casual crossings. The April and early-season dates additionally offer excellent sightings of Great Northern and Red-throated Divers still in winter or transitional plumage, as well as auk flocks moving offshore.
